For a long time authorities told workout enthusiast that the burning sensation you feel at times of hard training during weight training, or certain levels of cardio, came from a build up of lactic acid.

The research department at the University of California, Berkeley, discovered that the real reason is that it does come from lactic acid, but not in a negative way.

The acid is actually a source of fuel. The burning is the muscle converting glucose from food into lactic acid.  It's moved by means of protein which generates energy.  The more you workout, the more efficiently your body uses lactate as fuel, this allows you to train longer and harder.  Embrace the burn!
