I thought since I blog for a medical website it would be interesting to note of my experience at the doctor's office the other day. I would love to know how much the doctor's at my office make. They were packed, in fact, everytime I'm there people complain about the wait because they're so busy. But looking around the office it looks dilapidated. It's evident that they don't put much money towards the actual facility. The carpet and walls are dark and dirty. The office and furniture was in bad shape. What actually struck me as odd was that they still use an "old school" thermometer under the tongue. Not even our school nurse has this...it's a swipe of the head and done! The doctor came in with a mask - never seen this before. I guess the flu is rampant?. But, what really was out of character was her bedside manner. She's usually sympathetic and sweet. Instead, she was brisk and annoyed because I was "self-diagnosing" myself. Not on purpose! She asked what my symptoms were and I responded with, "I had what I thought was the stomach flu two weeks ago and a cold last week." I'm sorry - I had a 103 fever I wasn't exactly thinking clearly. To which she responded curtly, "I said, symptoms. Stop self-diagnosing. Give me things such as runny, nose, chills, etc." I slipped up during one of her questions and said that I had had a cold again and yet again she snapped at me for not providing symptoms. Wow. I know it's got to be frustrating for doctors when we get on the internet but I didn't even do that. LOL, I was just a sick patient trying to get well! I continue to not be impressed with doctors. Do I just have a money sign on my head or just the word flashing that I'm an idiot? Either way it would be great if a doctor's beside manner was a little more empathetic and less of a God complex. Thank goodness that the patient has a way to provide feedback about doctors on sites such as www.YourCity.MD. It's a small way to start holding doctors more accountable.
